Women Showing their Feet

Q: “Should a woman cover her feet when she prays?”

Shaikh al-Albaani:

“It is not permissible for her to pray with her feet uncovered, indeed it is not allowed for her to walk in the streets with her feet uncovered, because the feet are part of the `awrah of a woman based on Allaah’s (`azza wa jal) Saying: {And let them not stamp their feet to make known what they conceal of their adornment}.[1] The woman during the Days of Ignorance used to wear what is known in the Arabic language as khalkhaal (anklet), meaning a bracelet with small bells. So when the woman walked, she in order to turn the men’s attention to her would strike the ground with her feet so the anklet would make a noise and the men would hear that; and such was due to shaitaan`s whisperings to her.

This means that the feet used to be covered. Because of what? Because of the jilbaab that the women were commanded to cast down from over their heads, according to Allaah’s Saying: {O Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their outer garments (jilbaabs) close upon themselves}.[2] And it is mentioned in the authentic hadeeth that the Prophet (sallAllaahu `alayhi wa sallam) said one day during a gathering in which there were also women: `Whoever drags his garment out of pride, Allaah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection. One of the women said: `O Messenger of Allaah, then our feet will be exposed.’ He (`alayhi ssalaam) said: `let (the women) lengthen (their garments) by a hand-span.’ She said: `Then a wind may come and uncover (their feet).’ He (`alayhi ssalaat wa ssalaam) said: `let them add another hand-span, i.e. a cubit, and not go beyond that.’[3] [4]

In this manner, the jilbaab of the Muslim woman at the time of the revelation of the above-mentioned verse: {to draw their outer garments (jilbaabs) close upon themselves} used to cover the feet since the socks that are widespread nowadays among both women and men were not widespread at that time. The woman used to cover her shins and feet with the long jilbaab that resembles the `abaa.ah. Therefore it is not permissible for a Muslim woman to uncover her feet while she is on the street, and it is even more impermissible for her to pray with her feet uncovered.”

[2] Surat ul-Ahzaab 33:59
[3] the Shaikh mentioned the general meaning, not the exact wording, of the woman’s speech

The Difference between Salafiyyah and the Rest of the Groups

Question: Some people claim that Salafiyyah is one among the other groups of today in the field and that they have the same ruling as all other groups. What do you say about this?

Shaykh al-Fawzân: Just as we said, Salafiyyah is the group that sticks to the truth. It is the one it is obligatory to subscribe to and work with. No other groups shall be considered to belong to the group that calls. For it is contradictory. How shall we follow a group that contradicts the way of Ahl-us-Sunnah wal-Jamâ’ah? The group that contradicts Salafiyyah, contradicts the way of the prophet (sallâ Allâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and his companions. To say that Salafiyyah is one of the Islâmic groups is wrong. Salafiyyah is the only group it is obligatory to follow, act in accordance with, join and go out in Jihâd with. It is not allowed for a Muslim to join any other group because it is deviant. Is a human pleased by joining the deviant ones? A Muslim is not pleased by this.

The messenger (sallâ Allâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said: “Adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs.”

The prophet (sallâ Allâhu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said about the saved group: “The one that follows what I and my Companions are follwing today.”

Does one want to be saved without taking the way to the rescue? ‘Are you hoping to be saved without going on its way? The boat does not float on dry land.’

The Virtue of Sleeping in Wudhoo

Upon the authority of Ibn Umar -Radhiyallahu ‘Anhumaa - who said that the Messenger – Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Was Salam Said: “Purify these Bodies (of yours), May Allah grant you purity, for indeed there is not a servant that spends the night in a state of purification except that an angel spends the night with him in his hair. He does not turn at anytime during the night except that the angel says: “Oh Allah forgive your servant for indeed he spent the night in a state of purity!” (Collected by Imaamut Tabaraani in ‘Mu’jam al Kabeer (13620) and declared ‘Hasan’ by shaikh Al Albaani in ‘Saheehul Jaami’ (3936))

Upon the authority of Ibn Umar – Radhiyallahu ‘Anhumaa who said that the messenger -Sallallahu ‘Alaihi Was Salam said: “Whoever goes to sleep in a state of purification an angel spends the night in his hair. He doesnt wake from the night except that the angel says: “Oh Allah forgive your servant such and such for indeed he spent the night in a state of purity“  (Collected by Ibn Hibaan (1048) and Shaikh Al Albaani declared it ‘Hasanun Saheeh’)

Upon the authority of Mu’aadh Ibn Jabal – Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu - who narrated upon the authority of the messenger – Sallallahu Alaihi Was Salam– Who said: “There is no Muslim that goes to sleep with the rememberance of Allah and in a state of purity and is then startled and wakes during the night and asks Allah for the good of this world and the hereafter except that he give it to him“ (Collected by Abu Daawood 5042 and declared ‘Saheeh’ by Shaikh Al Albaani)
