The Hunger of the Salaf and its Merits

It is reported from Ibn Sîrîn – Allâh have mercy on him – that a man once said to Ibn ‘Umar – Allâh be pleased with him: Can we offer you some Jawârish? He inquired, “And what is Jawârish?” The man replied, “It is something that will help you digest your food if you get too full up.” Ibn ‘Umar said, “I have not eaten my fill for four months – not because I cannot find food, but because I have lived with people who used to eat their fill at times and go hungry at others. [Abû Dâwûd, Al-Zuhd article 325.]

It is reported that Muhammad b. Sîrîn – Allâh have mercy on him–said: A man from the Companions of the Prophet – praise and peace of Allâh be upon him – would sometimes go three days without finding anything to eat,  so he would grill some animal skin and eat that. If he couldn’t find anything at all, he would [tie] a rock to himself to straighten his back. [Ibid. article 61.]

It is reported that Al-Hasan Al-Basrî – Allâh have mercy on him–said: By He in whose Hand is my soul, I have lived amongst people who never ordered food to be prepared for themselves If [food] was presented to one of them, he would eat, otherwise, he would be silent; and he would not care if it was hot or cold.
[Abû Nu’aym, Hilyatu Al-Awliyâ` 6:270.]

It is reported that Al-Fudayl b. ‘Ayyâd – Allâh have mercy on him–said: Two things harden the heart, too much talking and too much food. [Ibn Hibbân Al-Bustî, Rawdatu Al-’Uqalâ` p45, Matba’ah Al-Sunnah Al-Muhammadîyah 1949.]

It is reported that the Tâbi’î (Successor) ‘Uqbah b. Wassâj – Allâh have mercy on him – was once at a wedding reception where many kinds of dishes were offered and people started trying one dish after another. He started to cry, and said: “I found the first part of this Ummah fearing all this upon themselves.” And he ate only from one dish. [Ibid. article 261.]

It is reported that Mâlik b. Dînâr – Allâh have mercy on him – said: It is unfitting for a believer that his belly becomes his greatest concern, or that his desires dominate him. [Ibn Abî Al-Dunyâ, Al-Jû’ (The Book of Hunger) article 105.]

It is reported that Mâlik b. Dînâr – Allâh have mercy on him – said:
Whoever controls his belly controls all good deeds. [Ibid. article 99.]

Love of the Scholars

Imaam Aboo Uthmaan as-Saaboonee (d.449H) (rahimahullaah) said:
And one of the distinguishing signs of Ahlus-Sunnah is their love for the Imaams of the Sunnah, its Scholars, its helpers, and its close allies, and their hatred for the leaders of innovation who call to the Hell-Fire and who direct their associates and companions to the home of torment destruction. Allaah, the Sublime, has adorned the hearts of Ahlus-Sunnah, and the light of their hearts with love for the Scholars of the Sunnah, as  a bounty from Him, Whose Magnificence is perfect and Sublime.

Shaykh Ubayd al-Jaabiree on Differentiating Between Aqidah and Manhaj

Shaykh Ubayd al-Jaabiree (hafidhahullaah) was asked a question regarding
differentiating between Aqeedah (creed) and Manhaj (methodology)..?

He replied:

Aqeedah is that which obligatory for a man to believe concerning Allaah the Mighty and Majestic, and that which has come from Him and concerning His Messengers and whatever His Messengers came with. And the pillar and summary of is the six pillars of Imaan which are Imaan in Allaah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day and Imaan in al-Qadar, its good and its bad. Then whatever follows thereafter from that which is obligatory for a Muslim to believe, and that it is true and correct. Such as the affairs of the unseen like the emergence of fitan (tribulations) as was informed by the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa Sallam), and the news concerning those who have passed of the Prophets and Messengers, regardless of whether that is in the Book or the Sunnah. Also the situations in the Barzakh, and the punishement and bliss of the grave, and what will take place on the major Judgement day, such as the placing of the Hawd, the Bridge, the Scales and what is besides that.

As for manhaj, then it is a corroboration, establishment of the usool of the deen and
its furoo’ (foundations and branches), the manhaj is the path by which a person
corroborates the foundations and branches of the deen. So if this path is in agreement with the Book and the Sunnah and the way of the Salaf us-Saalih, then this is a true manhaj. And if it is in opposition to that then it is a corrupt manhaj.

And Islaam is brought together (composed) of these two,
(a) the soundness, correctness in aqidah, and
(b) the soundness and safety in manhaj.
Therefore, one of them cannot be separated from the other.

" The person whose manhaj is corrupt, have trust that this follows on from the corruption in his aqidah. When the aqidah is upright, in the correct way, then the manhaj will also be upright."

For the manhaj of the Khawaarij became corrupt because of the corruption in their aqidah. They held the belief of the lawfulness of the blood of those who commit major sins, and thus they permitted fighting and killing them and revolting against the sinful disobedient rulers. They made lawful the taking of blood and wealth. It is for this reason that it was said “They are disbelievers” by whoever said this from the people of knowledge (i.e. because they, the khawaarij made lawful what Allaah made unlawful, the taking of the blood of a Muslim upon other than a due right).
